A lot of people are wondering how and where to fish and New York, but only a few realize that if they are eighteen years old they are going to need a fishing license. I love fishing a lot and I love blogging and writing about it. The other day I received one email from a guy asking me to share with him more information regarding fishing in this particular city. I thought that instead of just providing ordinary replies to each person that asks me about this I would rather write an email and explain how to do it. Don’t you guys think this is a good idea? Well, I do!
If you like fishing you are going to like NY as well. There is no doubt about this, because enthusiasts are always offered the option to select both saltwater (ocean, sea) and freshwater (lakes, etc) fishing. New York is a really great place from this point of view, in comparison with some other states across US that simply don’t have both. However, there are plenty of people who like this kind of activity and are crazy about this hobby, but they either don’t know or simply forget to renew their fishing license. I’ll try and explain how to get it in case you need one.
There is absolutely nothing difficult in getting this license. I’ll try to be as concise as possible and explain this to you in just a few steps. If you are really serious about learning how to do it, you won’t have any problems I guess. Note that without an authentic license or no license at all you are more likely to get in legal trouble with local authorities and even get a pretty sustainable ticket. The law is fundamental and you as a citizen have to obey it no matter what happens. Several requirements are necessary to be met in order to get this fishing license in New York.
The very first thing that you are going to be required to meet is having that special resident’s license. I don’t really understand this one, but they claim that a person has to live at least 30 days before filling that fishing license application. Well, that might be fair for one single reason. I guess NY local authorities do not want to see strangers fishing in their waters. However, one should realize that ownership of something does not guarantee the fact that you are a resident of NY. Nevertheless if you have voter registration or a valid driver’s license you are fine.
Now it is time to get closer to the New York Department of Conserving the Environment. You need them in order to pick up that application for getting a fishing license. This is compulsory. As far as I know, there are no other options of getting it, especially when talking about the state of New York. I heard that you can use the internet to fill your personal details for that type of application, but I’m not sure about its existence. I’ve tried to locate the website, but unfortunately had no success. Remember, the department that you need is D.E.C.A.L.S.
When filling the application for getting a New York fishing license, besides all your personal details you also need to write down the particular body of water where you plan to run your main fishing activity. This is very important because there are different regulations for each particular river. Fishing in the Hudson River for example is not the same as fishing in the Susquehanna River basin. It’s all about the species of fish, which sometimes might be strongly protected by laws of a particular state. However, as long as you know the rules, there is nothing to worry.
If they ask you to pay some kind of fees you just have to do it. Your refuse will lead to the simple fact that they won’t handle you that fishing license for New York. The payment that you might need to offer them depends on the type of license and the priorities that you will be given. The time-frame (period) also matters a lot because it’s impossible that they set the same price for a monthly subscription and for a yearly one. Usually, this NY Environment Conserving department will offer you a license for all other type of hunting and sporting activities.
New York fishing is really fun and interesting because there are plenty of water basins that have plenty of fish one can enjoy catching. However, it is very important not to ignore all the existing legal aspects because you can easily get in trouble and sometimes be obliged by the authorities of the state to pay ten times more that you thought you might save while doing it silently. So get that fishing license by writing an application to D.E.C.A.L.S and enjoy!
